Adventures in Furnas: A Day Full of Natural Wonders in the Azores!

My name is Christine Nobles. I am a Czech woman living in Australia. I set off on a journey through Europe with my fiance, Mike. We spent three weeks in the Azores, and today, I want to share the story of our amazing second day.

Visiting Furnas Lake

Today’s adventure began with renting a scooter, allowing us to explore the island at our own pace. Our first stop was the beautiful Furnas Lake. The journey to the lake was an experience as we rode through picturesque landscapes filled with greenery and rolling hills.

The Gorgeous Gothic Chapel and Waterfalls

Along the way, we stumbled upon a stunning Gothic chapel surrounded by wild nature. After a brief stop to admire its beauty, we continued on foot to a nearby waterfall. The hike to the waterfall took about an hour, and it was filled with breath-taking nature. Being adventurous since childhood, I couldn’t resist climbing the unstable path to the top of the waterfall. The view from the top was absolutely mesmerizing and worth every moment of effort.

Hot Springs and food speciality

After admiring the waterfall, we hopped back on the scooter and circled the lake, which offered more beautiful views. Our next stop was the hot springs from the volcano. Here, we decided to try a local specialty – food cooked in the volcano. The locals use the natural heat from the volcano to prepare a traditional dish called Cozido das Furnas. It was a unique experience and one we would highly recommend to anyone.

Breathtaking Views and Tea Plantations

Scooter riding provided us with some of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island. We stopped at the Mirador lookout, where we were greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This stop was one of the highlights of the day and gave us the perfect opportunity to take some amazing photos.

On our way back to Ponta Delgada, we visited the Gorreana Tea Plantations, the only tea plantation in Europe. It was fascinating to see how tea is grown and processed here. This stop gave us an insight into the traditional method of tea production.

End of the Day:

This second day on the Azores was full of adventure and incredible experiences. Riding the scooter, exploring beautiful nature, and tasting local specialties filled us with joy and excitement for discovering new places. If you love adventure as much as I do, our experiences will surely inspire you to visit this magical place. I look forward to more days of discovery on the Azores and sharing these moments with you.
